Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation's leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The NREL is a research and teaching unit at Colorado State University with a mission “to ensure the sustainability of the Earth's ecosystems through the generation and application of new knowledge.” The department's interdisciplinary, ecosystem research promotes collaborations among disciplines and across fields of expertise at CSU and throughout the world. As a soft-money research unit, this role is critical to ensure adequate funding to sustain its vital role in the research community both locally and across the globe.

Position Summary

Want to help a team of researchers discover and apply microbial capabilities to solve pressing global problems? We are looking for motivated applied microbiologists, fermentation scientists, biological engineers, biochemists, and geneticists to work together on our team exploring novel applications of rare and unusual microbial metabolites. We are looking for help in the discovery and optimization of genes with novel functions, and in developing expression and fermentation systems to produce these materials.

This research is supported by grants from the Keck Foundation and the Grantham Foundation and engages scientists in departments across campus, including NREL, Ecosystem Science and Sustainability, CSU Analytical Resources Core, Chemistry, the WM Keck Metabolism Collective and others.

This position is initially for two years with the potential for renewal based on performance.

This is an open pool posting and applicants will be reviewed as positions become available.

Required Job Qualifications

· Candidates must have completed PhD degree in Microbiology, Fermentation, Biotechnology, Biological Engineering, Biochemistry, Physiology, Genetics, or other closely related fields at time of application.

· Previous experience working with microbial pure cultures and production of compounds from microbial cultures.

· Sound understanding of genetic modification of strains and heterologous expression systems.

· Demonstrated strength in independent thought, problem solving skills, experimental design, synthesizing data, and research.

· Expressed interest in collaborating as a team and excellent work ethic

· Strong writing abilities and demonstrated ability to synthesize information and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

· The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility by the start date of the position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

· Additional years of experience working in research (industry, government, or academia)

· Experience working with multiple taxonomically and physiologically diverse bacteria, yeast and fungi.

· Experience in genetics and molecular cloning for gene and activity optimization.

· Experience in fermentation for chemical products, bench-scale process optimization, scale-up and scale-down.

· Demonstrated skill in collaborating in interdependent teams of researchers across multiple scientific disciplines.
