Description

An excellent opportunity to undertake new and exciting research advancing biodetection technologies has come about following successful funding from the EPSRC's New Horizon Scheme. Sitting within the Microfluidics & Microengineering Research Group (MMRG), part of the Centre for Research in Biodetection Technologies (CRBT), the successful Research Fellow will be tasked with pushing the boundaries of microfluidics, material science and aerosol science to provide the next ground-breaking innovation in pathogen collection and early detection of environmental diseases.

This challenging and exciting new role within the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science, will benefit from the facilities, equipment and team's experience of the CRBT and MMRG where you will report to Dr Loic Coudron, Reader in Digital Microfluidics with over ten years of expertise in biodetection systems for in-field bio-diagnostics and one of the UK experts in electrowetting-based lab-on-a-chip.

An appointment to this role may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Research Fellow will investigate a new set of tools to bridge the gap separating current bioaerosol collection techniques from actual real-time monitoring by proposing a novel method for time-resolved continuous aerosol collection into liquid film sustained and controlled by electrowetting.

Leading the technical and experimental aspects of the project, the Research Fellow's duties will include:

• To investigate new materials and techniques for creation of high spread liquid film.

• To develop virtual channel and microfluidic droplet dispenser by exploiting surface properties.

• To design and manufacture a digital microfluidic device for flow control and sample supply.

• To design and manufacture an aerosol collector prototype integrating the microfluidics-controlled sustainable liquid film.

• Liaise with the research team, technology stakeholders and end-users to respond to current and future technical challenges facing virus collection and detection.

Skill and experience required

You will have proven experience working in a research environment, as well as practical experience in one, ideally more, of the following areas: microfluidics, microfabrication for MEMS and soft materials, materials chemistry and surface treatment, solid liquid interface and interaction, electrowetting and digital microfluidics, aerosol science, bioaerosol collection and detection, microbiological and molecular diagnostics.

In addition, you will have good interpersonal and communication skills as well as evidenced ability of team-working in a multidisciplinary environment.

Qualifications required

You will hold an undergraduate honours degree at a minimum 2:2 (or equivalent level qualification) in a relevant discipline. You will also hold a PhD (or equivalent qualification), or close to completion of PhD (no more than 3 months prior to viva) in a relevant subject area, or equivalent experience.
