Dundalk Institue of Technology

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Cell Biology

Introduction:

The Smooth Muscle Research Centre in Dundalk Institute of Technology, Ireland comprises a cross-disciplinary research team focused on the regulation of ion channels in health & disease.

Applications are invited for the post of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the field of Cell Biology, funded by Science Foundation Ireland’s Frontiers for the Future 2021 – Frontiers for Partnership Awards. This is an exciting, collaborative project between Dundalk Institute of Technology and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, that will examine the regulation of ion channels by regulatory proteins and how this is affected in patients with tremor. We previously reported a unique interaction between large conductance Ca2+-activated potassium (BK) channels and a completely unrelated protein, LINGO1, which is upregulated in the brain of Parkinson’s Disease patients (PMID: 31932443).

The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will play a central role in this project and will have the opportunity to design, execute and analyse experiments which examine the cellular basis of the effects of LINGO proteins on BK channel function. The candidate will use their expertise in cell biology to design and test the effects of different chimeric constructs and mutants on the biophysical properties of ion channels, including BK channels. The post is available from 9th Jan 2023, initially for 12 months. Subject to satisfactory performance the post may be renewed for up to a further 36 months.

Responsibilities:

To assist a team investigating the contribution of LINGO proteins to the biophysical and pharmacological properties of BK channels and assess the molecular mechanisms underlying their modulatory effects. It is expected that the successful applicant will have significant, demonstrable experience in molecular biology and ideally electrophysiology, commensurate with their career stage.

Main Duties:

o Using molecular approaches to elucidate how LINGO proteins modulate ion channel function.

o Using patch clamp electrophysiology approaches to determine the modulatory effects of LINGO proteins on cellular function.

o Tissue dissection and dispersal of neuronal, smooth muscle and epithelial cells.

o Establishing and maintaining cell and tissue culture.

o Collaborating with scientists in RCSI to establish neuronal cultures.

o Analysis of data and construction of figures for publication.

o Training PhD students in cell biology techniques.

o Participate in the supervision and mentoring of PhD students.

o Actively participate in the outreach, communication and dissemination activities of the project.

o Join, participate in and develop external networks, to help build relationships for future activities.

o Prepare, travel to and present at scientific meetings, collaborative laboratories and external conferences.

o Any other duties as specified by the SMRC team.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must possess an Honours degree, or equivalent, in Life Sciences, a relevant PhD, ideally a minimum of 2 years experience in Post-Doctoral research in cell biology, including chimera generation, mutagenesis, cloning, heterologous expression systems, cell culture, PCR.

Desirable Criteria

The ideal candidate will also have experience/in-depth knowledge of electrophysiology, Ca2+ imaging and structural biology, as evidenced by high impact publications in the field, commensurate with stage of career.

Please note: All appointees will be placed on the first point of the relevant scale as per new entrants circular to the Public Sector. Candidates may be awarded incremental credit based on previous earnings and experience. The qualifications for appointment and conditions of service for this post are subject to the provisions of the Institutes of Technology Acts, 1992-2006 and as amended.

Candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on information supplied. The qualifications for appointment and conditions of service for all above posts are subject to the provisions of the Institutes of Technology Acts, 1992- 2006 and as amended.

The appointee will carry out the lawful instructions of the President and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister for Education and Skills.

Application forms may be accessed on the DKIT on-line e-Recruitment system. No other form of application will be accepted. Further information is available on the Institute website https://www.dkit.ie/human-resource/vacancies.

Generic Duties and Responsibilities of a Postdoctoral Researcher

Indicative Job Description

A Postdoctoral Researcher is someone who has recently completed and graduated with a PhD qualification normally within the past 5 years. The primary focus of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be research, however a particular emphasis during this stage should be placed on gaining experience in grant writing and acquiring generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision). Postdocs may be expected to supervise postgraduate research students, and identify and apply for funding opportunities. The time spent as a Postdoc is considered an internship phase as the researcher will have dual goals in terms of the research project and their own career development into the academe, industry, government or the non-profit sector. Post-docs are encouraged to take responsibility for their own career development in the knowledge that for most researchers their careers will lie outside academia. The personal career/research-development plan should highlight specific research project goals and milestones, and to enable him/her to explore various career options and identify any further skills/experience needs. International and intersectoral experience is highly desirable and mobility is strongly encouraged. The career development plan will be evaluated through a systematic and continuous professional development and appraisal system. S/he will be mentored in the development of their research career by a Principal Investigator (PI)/Snr member of academic staff – in association with the appropriate College and School – who has secured funding for the position or who is named as a mentor on the award that the Postdoctoral researcher has secured (e.g. Research Councils). The appointment will normally last four years but no longer than five years. S/he will normally be based in the offices of a designated R&D Centres/Group, and will be integrated into the activities of their College/School within DKIT. All Postdoctoral researcher positions must be competitively and publicly advertised and appointed in line with recruitment guidelines aforementioned.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Manage and conduct a specific programme of research and scholarship under the leadership of your Principal Investigator/Snr member of academic staff;

2. Disseminate the outcomes of this research and scholarship including peer-reviewed academic publications of international standing;

3. Assist in the further development of the research programme and in seeking and pursuing appropriate external funding;

4. Where appointed to do so by DKIT, supervise graduate research students

5. Take responsibility for, manage and conduct administrative and management tasks associated with the programme of research

6. Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by your Principal Investigator.

7. Play an active role in knowledge and technology transfer activities;

8. Manage research grants in accordance with DKIT Financial Regulations and the conditions of the funding body

9. Prepare and present findings of research activity to colleagues for review purposes.

10. Submit papers to appropriate journals and attend and present findings at appropriate conferences.

11. Prepare progress reports on research for funding bodies as required.

13. Seek new areas of research and prepare and submit research bids and proposals that will enhance the reputation of the Institute

14. Participate fully in the wider research and scholarly activities of the Research Centre/Group and College/School;

15. The postholder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager
