About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDF) to join the research group of A/Professor Daniel Ortiz-Barrientos. The PDF will focus their efforts on developing their expertise in population genetics of adaptation and speciation to become an emergent leader in these disciplines. At this level, it is expected that the incumbent will contribute to service and engagement roles and activities.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Research

General

Produces quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high-quality outlets.

Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.

Work with colleagues from the ARC Centre for Plant Success in developing joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.

Contribute to progressing towards the transfer of knowledge, technology, and practices to research end-users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.

Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

Specific

Develop a coherent research program on the parallel evolution of molecular traits and how modifiers of mutation and recombination rate affect the origin of complex adaptations.

Produce genomic resources in the form of a Pangenome for Seneciolautus.

Publish high-quality research and review articles on integrating molecular evolutionary genetics and systems biology.

Present research results at national and international conferences.

Aid and lead the writing of manuscripts from previously produced data in the Ortiz-Barrientos Research Group.

2. Supervision and Researcher Development

Contribute to the adequate supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate) from the Ortiz-Barrientos Research Group and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Plant Success.

Effective in supervising and managing researcher development from the Ortiz-Barrientos Research Group and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Plant Success.

Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development to members of the Ortiz- Barrientos Research Group and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Plant Success.

3. Citizenship and Service

Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align with UQ values.

Shows leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the Ortiz-Barrientos Research Group.

Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations during other team members' absences.

Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.

Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit, including all CoE for Plant Success research nodes.

Begin to develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

This role is subject to The University's Code of Conduct.

About You

Completion of a PhD in Evolutionary Genetics.

An emerging profile in research in Evolutionary Genetics.

Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.

Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions toward external activities

Outstanding skills in population genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and evolutionary theory, particularly on adaptation and speciation.

Ample experience in reciprocal transplant experiments and working with plants in field and glasshouse conditions.

Outstanding skills in molecular genomics, including high molecular weight DNA extractions from difficult leaf materials, construction of whole- genome sequencing DNA libraries and Hi-C libraries.

Experience with High-Performance Computing.

Past or current supervision of honours or PhD students and be actively engaged in developing early-career researchers.

Outstanding quantitative and analytical skills and ideally have imparted their knowledge in courses like biostatistics or advanced courses in evolutionary genetics.

Exemplar work ethic and demonstrated ability to design, execute, and complete complex experiments in a timely fashion.

Outstanding communication skills both in oral and written form.

A passion for knowledge and discovery.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for three years at Academic Level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be $72,144.35 to $96,530.67 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be $84,408.89 to $112,940.88 per annum.
