The primary responsibility of the Post Doctoral Research Fellow position is to conduct research in coastal and marine sciences. Other areas of interest will be considered that fall within the broad field of marine sciences. Specific areas of interest must be aligned with the current research of two or more UNCW mentors from the link below. It is highly desirable that the work include interdisciplinary collaborations amongst the candidate and UNCW marine science faculty. The position will include opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate student research at the discretion of the UNCW mentors. Candidates from all marine and coastal sciences or other closely aligned disciplines are encouraged to apply. Communication with potential UNCW mentors prior to submitting an application is required for guidance on project feasibility, relevance to ongoing research projects, resource availability, and expected start date.

A Ph.D. degree prior to commencing the two-year appointment starting between July 1 and December 1, 2019 is required; however, applicants do not need to have already received their degree prior to applying.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

PhD in marine science, oceanography or closely aligned natural science discipline. Expertise in coastal and/or marine science.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Candidates from all marine and coastal sciences or other closely aligned disciplines will be considered.

Required Certifications or Licensures Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The University of North Carolina Wilmington's Center for Marine Science (CMS) is recognized both nationally and internationally for conducting research that contributes to the understanding of environmental processes and problems. Through research, education and outreach, the Center strives to increase knowledge and cultivate public awareness about coastal and marine sciences. This includes a variety of fields such as physical oceanography; marine and coastal biology; marine, atmospheric and natural products chemistry; marine geology; and environmental sciences. Currently there are more than 100 active research programs ongoing at CMS and over 140 scientists, staff and students at CMS. The teaching and research facility located on the Intracoastal Waterway in southeastern North Carolina features state of the art core facilities in spectrometry and spectroscopy, light stable isotopes, DNA and water quality analysis as well as running seawater systems, a coastal workboat fleet and a wide range of oceanographic equipment that are available to all CMS researchers.
