Description

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which - like the sun - generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within the ITER Technology & Diagnostics (ITED) Division a position for a Post-doctoral researcher (m/f/d) in the field of experimental plasma catalysis. The plasma for gas conversion (P4G) group is working on topic of plasma conversion of low energy molecules into value-added chemicals, by using low temperature plasmas. The research is contributing to power-to-gas initiative in the field of energy storage, hydrogen technology, and chemical energy carriers. Currently the group operates two microwave experiments covering the pressure range from low to atmospheric pressure, and focusing on fundamental understanding of the dominant CO2 pathways with aim to optimize efficiency of the plasma CO2 conversion. The group is expanding towards the field of plasma- catalysis (dry methane reforming, ammonia synthesis, etc.), operating both microwave plasmas and dielectric-barrier-discharges (DBD).

Your tasks

· Characterization and development of plasma sources (predominantly DBD) for different plasma-surface interactions and various plasma conditions

· Expanding the current range of in-situ, in-vacuo, and ex-situ experiments for plasma source characterization and surface analysis

· Execution, evaluation and dissemination of the test results related to performance of plasma sources and implications for scientific advantage of plasma catalysis

Your profile

· Completed doctoral thesis in plasma physics, catalysis, or related fields

· Experience with experimental techniques related to plasmas, gases and surfaces (e.g. OES, FTIR, XPS)

· Experience in the operation and characterization of plasma sources

· Background in atmospheric plasma research and/or DBD is of advantage

· A strong scientific track record, including publications in peer-reviewed journals

· High motivation to contribute to the application of plasma catalysis in the power-to-gas initiative

Your abilities

· Strong ability to conceptualize, perform and evaluate experiments

· Very good communication and interpersonal skills

· Strong ability to present complex scientific and technical matters fluently in English

· Ability to effectively work and integrate in an international team

The position is limited to a duration of three years. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 13 according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund).
