JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

The Hubert Department of Global Health, Rollins School of Public Health seeks a postdoctoral GEMMA scholar, supported in part by the Global Elimination of Maternal Mortality (GEMMA) Abortion Fund. The GEMMA fund was established in 2003 to encourage scholarship in preventing maternal deaths from abortion by Dr. Roger and Susan Rochat. The GEMMA Faculty Scholar will support the GEMMA goal by conducting research related to the prevention of maternal deaths from abortion.

The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with Dr. Roger Rochat as well as with colleagues in the Rollins School of Public Health, School of Nursing and School of Medicine. With mentored support, the scholar will engage in research activities and mentoring related to global prevention of maternal mortality related to abortion. Research activities include the design and implementation of a research study related collaboration with colleagues on study design, implementation, analysis of quantitative or qualitative data, and preparation of manuscripts. The scholar will also contribute significantly to mentoring and supervising MPH graduate student researchers.

The scholar position will provide 50% FTE for two years. Salary is commensurate with federal NRSA stipend levels, and funds are available for conference travel. It is expected that the GEMMA scholar will secure additional funding (50%) via research grants, other research collaborations and/or teaching. The scholar is strongly encouraged to teach a GEMMA relevant course at RSPH for up to an additional 10% of salary.

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in a related field such as epidemiology, behavioral sciences, public policy, sociology, or nursing with substantive knowledge and experience with sexual and reproductive health and/or abortion. Candidates must have strong organizational skills and have demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, experience working in low- and middle-income countries, experience in designing and conducting independent research, and be fluent in English with strong writing ability. Candidates should also have project management and supervisory experience. Preferred qualifications include a history of student mentoring and teaching, publications, and of funded research experience related to sexual and reproductive health and abortion.
