爱丁堡大学计算生物学方向博士后招聘

Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral research position in the group of Dr Joe Marsh at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, University of Edinburgh.

We are looking for a postdoc to work in the analysis of pathogenic protein-coding mutations using computational approaches. This project will involve two main objectives. First, the postdoc will investigate novel disease-associated variants, with a particular emphasis on using structural bioinformatics approaches to probe molecular mechanisms, and computational phenotype predictors to provide support for likely pathogenicity. This will involve working closely with our many collaborators who have identified novel mutations. For examples of what this will entail, please see some of our recent collaborative studies (e.g.Williamson et al, Genet Med 2019; Aitken et al, Am J Hum Genet 2019; Heyn et al, Nat Genet 2019; Shaw et at, Nat Genet 2017; McEntagart et al, Am J Hum Genet 2016).

Second, the postdoc will lead their own project involving the large-scale analysis of human disease mutations. Building on our growing knowledge of how protein structure and interactions can influence the phenotypic effects of mutations, this project will seek to improve our ability to identify phenotypically important mutations associated with Mendelian disorders, complex traits, and cancer. A variety of strategies will be used, including structural bioinformatics, molecular modelling, machine learning, and the integration of diverse proteomic, genomic and deep mutational scanning datasets. Ultimately, the goal will be to identify features of proteins and protein complexes that can be used to improve the accuracy of computational phenotype predictions. Note that there is some room for flexibility in this project depending on the specific interests and expertise of the candidate.

Applicants should have (or be close to having) a PhD in a relevant biological or computational discipline. Enthusiastic candidates with a non-biological but computational background (e.g. computer science, physics, engineering) should contact with Dr Marsh to discuss the position before applying. The candidate should be proficient in at least one programming language and be comfortable with carrying out large-scale analysis in a computing cluster environment. Experience in the analysis of protein structures and mutations is highly desired. Candidates should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work well as part of a group.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to contact Dr Joe Marsh at joseph.marsh@igmm.ed.ac.uk to discuss the post in more detail.
